Swiss watchmaker IWC has launched two new watches inspired by the Mercedes G-Wagon, available in gold or carbon cases and with a powerful power reserve of up to a week.

Inspired by the utilitarian Mercedes-AMG G 63, the watch is available in a gold or carbon case, both with a sapphire crystal case back and a dial design inspired by the grille of the AMG car.

The gold model's case and crown are actually made from IWC's 18-karat Armor Gold, an alloy that's stronger than regular gold, which tends to be quite soft. The large case is 46.2 mm in diameter and 14.4 mm thick, with sapphire crystals on the front and back, and is paired with a black rubber strap inlaid with microfiber. luxury cheap Watches

The watch is water-resistant to 10 bar (i.e. 100 meters) and is powered by IWC’s own 52010 automatic mechanical movement with 31 jewels and a power reserve of up to 168 hours (i.e. a full seven days).

IWC says this is achieved thanks to a mechanism that exploits "even the smallest movements of the rotor in both directions" to build up a week-long power reserve. The movement can be seen through the exhibition case back, which features the Mercedes logo in the center and the words "Edition G-Class" engraved on it. The dial houses a date complication at six o'clock, as well as a pair of subdials showing seconds and the power reserve in days.

Although the gold case looks elegant, we think the carbon version is the more interesting of the two. This is the first IWC watch to feature a case made of ceramic matrix composite (CMC). The composite, designed in collaboration with the German Aerospace Center, has fibers embedded in a ceramic matrix rather than a polymer, IWC said. This helps the enclosure withstand thermal shock or sudden temperature changes. buy replica watches

IWC explains that the material is made starting from traditional carbon fiber-reinforced polymer and then undergoes a heat treatment called pyrolysis over several days. What's left behind, the company says, is a "dense braid of fibers embedded in a porous carbon matrix."

A silicon crystal is then placed on top and the component is heated in an oven; during this so-called silicide process, the silicon is pulled into the cavities of the carbon and causes a chemical reaction, forming a new matrix made of silicon carbide ceramics.

The case is then finished using diamond tools, resulting in a carbon pattern that is unique to each watch. IWC’s carbon fiber watch is mechanically identical to its gold counterpart, but has a slightly larger case at 46.5mm x 14.6mm.
